The IULM Debate Club is active again this year. It is an initiative created by students for students, which aims to spread the practice of debate, very common in Anglo-Saxon universities, to our university as well. Debate has a format and rules that make it similar to a game, creating fun opportunities for exchanges of ideas and stimulating challenges. Debate Club participants are joined by coaches from our university and special guests.
The rules of the game involve a simulation of the process of passing laws in the British Parliament. Just as in Westminster, in fact, an argument is proposed from which two counterparts take sides: one for and one against.
The goal is to learn how to support ideas, argue them in an orderly and convincing way, and refine the art of rhetoric and confrontation. These are essential cross-curricular skills for college and beyond.
This year Debate Club members have had the opportunity to participate in internal competition, tournaments on national soil, and also to represent our university in an international competition.
Six students are participating in the current edition of the National Debate Society Italy championship, competing on a wide variety of topics.
For the first time in the history of our university, three of our Debaters (Giulia Lanzoni, Federico Binaghi and Nathan Amatucci) have also been invited to compete in the competition organized by The Hague University (THIULDT), with the support of IULM professors Martha Friel and Riccardo Manzotti.
